Scores of protesters, yesterday,
staged a peaceful protest at the Federal Ministry of Communications over the
decision of the Federal Government to withdraw their appointment and cancel
their recruitment by the National Information Technology Development Agency,
NITDA.
Spokesperson for the protesters, Mr.
Daniel Nkpabo, called on NITDA to immediately issue them with their letters of
posting, since they were duly recruited by the agency. According to him, NITDA
had denied that they were given any appointment letter and asked them to go,
that their appointments were made through the back door. He said: “We are law
abiding citizens of the country, we want to work and it is our right to work,
and as such, we are demanding that they give us our posting letters to the
different places for us to resume work.
‘’Our recruitment was not done
illegally because constitutionally, government has a commission that is
responsible for the recruitment of staff, which is the Federal Character
Commission, FCC.
“This commission has given approval
for our recruitment, so, I do not know how else the recruitment can be legal
because they are aware of our recruitment. “It has been a long wait and we are
tired already, most of us had to resign from our previous jobs to take up this
appointment. We have bills to pay; our children are there, their fees need to
be paid too.
‘’They cannot say the agency is
short of funds because some of us were opportuned to be posted before they sent
us away, and we discovered that we were all captured in the agency’s budget for
2016.” ‘’Our names have all been incorporated in the nominal role of the
agency.
Enough of the excuses, the entire
NITDA has about 70 staff only, why won’t they give us placement when they need
more hands? What do they want to achieve by playing with able Nigerians who are
ready to work.” Also speaking, one of the protesters, Isah Mohammed, said the
Minister had previously asked them to wait till a new Director General was
appointed.
